Dwight Mitchell

Dwight's subject matter consists of abstract paintings, realistic landscapes, still life’s, and portraits. He received a B.A. in Studio Art with concentrations in painting and graphic design. He is a studio artist at Barnes Corner Gallery in Historic Downtown Wilson. As a teaching artist, he has experience teaching children and adults in public and charter schools, local community colleges, and private lessons as a small business owner. His artwork is in permanent public and private collections across the United States.

Dwight's goal is to share his feelings. He begins with a blank canvas and layers it with color and mark-making to create his version of abstract realism. He finds beauty everywhere. As a teaching artist, Dwight believes anyone can draw and paint by learning the basic foundations and acquiring contemporary techniques. Artists, he considers, are lifelong learners. His focus is light, color, and contrast, created in multiple layers to render a final image.

Dwight has loved art since he was a child. He was drawn to color and fascinated by creating something from nothing. Art is relaxing and can be done for self-pleasure or as a professional. He describes his creative process as a dual experience of relaxation and excitement. Dwight feels a burst of energy when he witnesses each painting or drawing. For him, creating art is an integral part of his life.
