Artist Statement

Born in Durham, North Carolina in 1967, Carol Torian now lives and works in Raleigh.

Carol is a self-taught artist whose practice has encompassed a diverse body of work including drawing, painting, fiber art, ceramics and photography. Carol enjoys using a variety of materials and is best known for her colorful abstract work and drawings. 

Recent exhibitions include HER at Rocky Mount Mills (2022) and Collective Voices (2020-2021). As a visual artist, fiction writer, playwright, producer and gallerist, Carol creates work that is inspired by nature, urban settings, women’s issues, and social justice issues. Carol is a graduate of Meredith College, and the founder and owner of Drinking Gourd Gallery.
